RTsafe endorsed in treatment of multiple brain metastases

10May 2016

Brainlab AG recently announced that its new software has been used for the first time in the U.S. at Jefferson Hospital for Neuroscience in Philadelphia to deliver a tailored radiosurgery treatment to a patient who was diagnosed with cancer that had metastasized to the brain. Brainlab AG relied on the RTsafe quality assurance products to validate this procedure, using an anatomically perfect effigy of the patient’s head and brain.

Following is the testimonial of the director of stereotactic radiosurgery physics at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital for Neuroscience, Philadelphia, USA, Dr Haisong Liu.

For years we have been confined to testing the accuracy of our procedures on generic dosimetry phantoms. With RTsafe technology we now have access to millimeter-perfect reproductions of an actual patient. The added reassurance that comes from treating a ‘virtual patient’ via RTsafe is invaluable and provides the verification and End-to-End quality assurance procedure that any radiosurgery program, and indeed any external auditing organization, seeks. It greatly improves our confidence on using our new Brainlab’s Automatic Brain Metastasis Planning software to treat multiple brain metastases with a single isocenter.”
